GGS was subcontracted by PCL to design and construct a new 222m2 teaching and research greenhouse as part of the scope to be delivered on the UofL Science Commons Project (formerly Destination Project). Their scope included design and construction of a turn-key greenhouse connected to the base building during construction of the base building itself. The scope included steel structure, all associated glazing, and greenhouse systems and controls. Building systems supplying the greenhouse were by base building as well as slab on grade and foundations by PCL. GGS was selected following a Request for Proposal process based on design development information assembled by a greenhouse consultant obtained by the UofL. GGS proved to be very knowledgeable and provided a high level of expertise in assisting with completing the design of the greenhouse for the UofL. It was quite clear that they possessed an extensive amount of experience in design and construction of greenhouses as we navigated through the design process. This proved to be very important in completing the difficult task of taking the design development information by others and preparing a complete design for the construction phase on time. GGS were hands-on all through the construction process and their knowledge of greenhouses and the related systems were important in turning over the facility. They actively participated with all aspects of onboarding and start up of the greenhouse with the UofL staff and assisted with integration into the base building with our base building contractors.
This letter is in recognition of GGS Greenhouse Structure's work with Chandos Construction on the UBCO Plant Growth Facility project completed on July 7, 2020. This project faced several budget and design constraints from the beginning. Your willingness to explore value engineering ideas and propose cost saving alternatives were crucial in bringing this project to life, while keeping the building functionality intact and suitable for the researchers’ needs. This project occurred during the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic which posed a serious threat to our schedule and safety. Your crews worked diligently and safely to ensure the overall building was turned over 1 month ahead of schedule. Your complete and detailed Submittal package allowed for early coordination with the subconsultants for a finalized design. Because of the accuracy and detail on the drawings, there were very few E&O related changes, which allowed us to complete the project under budget, and allowed the client to add “wish-list” items back into the scope. On behalf of the entire Chandos Construction team I would like to thank GGS for their role in the project and look forward to doing more projects with them in the future.

BOND appreciates your expertise and professionalism that your company has provided during this project. This was truly evident when the project had the need for intumescent paint on your steel structure. GGS was able to solicit and provide this added unique material for the project although clearly not part of your original scope. Frank Jonkman and Ken Langendoen did a great job in directing the installers and navigating them through the technical details and operation of the greenhouse. They were very easy to work with. GGS completed an advanced greenhouse structure for me on the Collaborative Science Research Building located at the University of Saskatchewan. The project was complicated as the greenhouse was located on roof of the new four level building. GGS was organized and collaborative throughout the entire build. Their knowledge of greenhouse structures and each component was utilized by the team throughout all phases of the project including permitting, design, construction and occupancy. Even though Ken and Frank were both stationed in Ontario during this build, they made constant site visits to check up on the project and collaborate with us and our subcontractors to ensure a smooth install. They did everything from helping our consultants discuss occupancy concerns with the city to working with our electricians, who were new to greenhouses, with their installation. GGS’s erection crew worked hard and put in long hours to ensure our project met our critical substantial completion date. They worked safety and followed all instructions. I would highly recommend GGS to any construction team looking to utilize their services. They were a crucial part in our project’s success.
